Talk programming is great when it feels original. Series programming is great when it seems original, and does not in any way shape or form involve pioneers. All programming should exist on its own merit and if there's any pandering to be done, it should be decisively aimed at youth in order to ensure future viewership. I love the CBC, but it has taken me years to negate my mind's Pavlovian response whereby I hear "CBC" and immediately think of a grouping of programs that should never have existed but did because costumes and properties were still lying around from somewhere near Avonlea. That was not hyperbole. Years, it has taken. Years.
In my opinion, the strongest thing the CBC has right now is the Hour. Since Mr. Stroumboulopoulos exhibits a unique, laid-back, "call 'em like I see 'em" charm, he needs a media blitz behind him to do the attention-getting that reads as contrary to his persona. I'd like to be confronted by his image all over the place in my daily affairs. Then I'd feel like everyone at least has a chance to catch on to one of our best programs ever.
