*An overnight tv-version of "Brave New Waves" showcasing all the videos that Much Music won't touch anymore. A heavy empahsis of course on Canadian stuff. Such a show could be very cheap to produce and probably wouldn't even need a host. And if you need a producer, ring me up!
*A return to regional newscasts (and probably more radio affiliates in places like Hamilton and London as examples). Private coverage of our regions is getting horribly bad (especially in light of the Bell-Chum merger).
*CBC should continue to air professional sports (with advertising). Advertising should be removed from the rest of the schedule only if government funding is increased. A trend away from advertising on news programming would be a start.
*CBC should strive for both edgy, yet popular programming, but not necessarily for the same time slot. There's 24 hours in a day and this national service should be a huge resource to Canadians trying to air their creative work. Devote time for this. Also devote time for the more broad-based stuff like Air Farce, HNIC, etc. It's a big network and a big day. Find room for everyone.
*More feature films and documentaries. Perhaps a "movie night in Canada" that airs popular Canadian, foreign and select U.S. features.
*Trying to make CBC-TV as quirky and distinctive as CBC Radio.
*Make as much CBC programming as possible available via the net.
*Hand out free "@cbc.ca" e-mail addresses.
*Start a national web-forum regarding everything from CBC programming to national politics.
*Have an SAP channel for Radio-Canada programming to be broadcast in English and CBC programming to be broadcast in French. Why the CBC-SRC haven't done this yet is beyond me.
*CBC Radio 3 is amazing, but having it 100% Canadian limits what it could be. I'm all for new venues for Canadian talent, but only allowing Canadian artists on the network seems a bit nationlistic (and not in a good way). Look to BBC 6 Music for some inspiration in that department.
*In fairness, about 25% of Radio 3 programming should be in French.
*Look at the popular programming on the speciality channels and figure out ways if there's a way to do similar stuff that a more broader audience would want to watch. For example, a "national cook-off" where contestents from different provinces try to out-cook each other.
*Reposition "Country Canada" as something a bit different. We are also a big urban country and I really feel urban Canada sometimes gets ignored too. For example, I'd love to watch a doc about Vancouver's Expo '86 or an architectural tour of Montreal or an examination of Toronto's condoization, etc.
*Re-name Newsworld "CBC 24." I can't really explain why, but I've never really liked the name.
*Cross-advertise all programming on all platforms: web, CBC TV, SRC-TV, Radio 1, 2, 3, Premiere Chaine, Chaine Culturelle, RCI, Country Canada, Doc Channel, etc.
